First Day of Songkran. Water, Chaos and a Taste of Home

Today was our first real experience with Songkran in Pattaya. You hear about it, you see videos, but being in it is something else.

We started the day simple, or at least we tried to.

We went to Young Daily on Beach Road for coffee. Sitting there in the morning, before everything fully starts, you get a small moment of calm. Coffee, something to eat, just easing into the day.

Then came a small surprise. Stroopwafels.

Finding something so Dutch, right there in Pattaya during Songkran, felt strange but also familiar. Sitting there with coffee and stroopwafels while outside the city was preparing for chaos. That contrast made it even better.

But that calm didn’t last long.

Once we stepped outside, it started immediately.

Buckets, water guns, hoses. No one stays dry. You don’t walk through the streets, you become part of it. Within minutes, we were completely soaked.

And that’s when you realize. This is not something you watch, it’s something you join.

Beach Road was full. Music, people laughing, groups everywhere. Locals and tourists all doing the same thing. Throwing water, getting soaked, and enjoying it.

At first, it feels a bit overwhelming. You don’t know where to look, where the next splash is coming from. But after a while, you just go with it.

That’s the whole point.

What stands out is the atmosphere. It’s not aggressive, it’s playful. Everyone is there for the same reason. To celebrate, to have fun, and to let go for a bit.

We moved through the streets, stopping here and there, sometimes just watching, sometimes joining in. There’s no real plan during Songkran. You just follow the flow.

And every now and then, I thought back to that quiet moment earlier. Sitting with coffee and stroopwafels. It felt like a completely different day.

That contrast made it memorable.

By the time the afternoon moved into evening, we were tired, soaked, and completely in it. The city didn’t really slow down, but we did.

Looking back, this wasn’t just another day in Pattaya. This was Songkran. Loud, wet, chaotic, but also fun in a way that’s hard to explain until you experience it yourself.

And this was only the first day.
